Copper Wire Drawing Exposed Surface: Stain Removal & Anti-Oxidation Technology, R&D Practice and Sharing by Tomon

Hello everyone, this is Tomon. As an R&D engineer engaged in copper processing technology research for many years, I have focused on solving the pain points of stain contamination and oxidation of exposed copper surfaces after wire drawing. Through long-term experiments and on-site verification, I have summarized a set of practical technical solutions, which I share today to provide reference for peers.

I. R&D Background: Clarifying Stain Nature

Stains on exposed copper after wire drawing affect product quality and increase costs. Through research, I classified them into four types and clarified their characteristics:

  • Wire Drawing Residues: Metal dust and lubricant residues (5-20μm) adhere to texture gaps, reducing anti-oxidation effect by over 30% if not removed.
  • Fingerprints/Sweat Stains: Sweat components react with copper to form hard-to-remove dark complexes, an easily ignored oxidation hidden danger.
  • Mild Oxidation: A 1-3nm oxide film forms in 2-8 hours, restorable via mild cleaning without damaging texture.
  • Environmental Stains: Dust and oil accumulate in textures, accelerating oxidation by 2-3 times.

My core R&D principle: protect texture while achieving targeted, thorough cleaning without secondary damage.

II. R&D Achievement: Stain Removal Solutions

I developed three targeted solutions verified in enterprises:

1. Mild Basic Cleaning (Dust, Mild Fingerprints)

Key R&D: Microfiber cloth + soft bristle brush, distilled water + neutral detergent. Operation: Brush dust along texture, wipe with diluted detergent (1:50), rinse and dry within 5 minutes. Reminder: Avoid repeated rubbing, control detergent at 0.5-1ml/m².

2. Deep Decontamination (Stubborn Lubricant/Oil)

Key R&D: BW-820 degreaser (5-10% dilution), decontamination rate ≥98%. Operation: Dilute 1:10, apply and stand 3-5 minutes, scrub, neutralize with 5% baking soda, rinse and dry. Reminder: Ventilated operation, avoid strong acids/alkalis.

3. Mild Oxidation Removal

Key R&D: Copper-specific polishing cloth + weak acid polishing agent. Operation: Clean first, wipe oxidized areas (1-1.5N force), rinse. Emergency plan: Lemon juice + salt paste (1:1) for non-professional scenarios.

Cleaning verification: No stains/residues, clear texture, water contact angle ≥90°.

III. R&D Upgrade: Anti-Oxidation Solutions

Focusing on “isolating air/moisture”, I developed four graded protection solutions:

1. Wax Layer (Short-Term, Decoration/Home)

Key R&D: Natural beeswax (5-10μm thickness). Operation: Melt and apply along texture, dry 1-2 hours. Data: 3-6 months protection indoors, reapply every 1-2 months in harsh environments.

2. Passivation (Medium-Term, Industrial/Electronic)

Key R&D: CY-502 passivator (1:5-1:10 dilution), 3-5nm passivation film. Operation: Soak 5-10 minutes at room temperature, rinse and dry. Advantages: 3-5x corrosion resistance of wax, 1-2 years protection, reusable reagent.

3. Spraying (Long-Term, Outdoor/Harsh Environments)

Key R&D: Copper-specific matte varnish, spray pressure 0.3-0.5MPa, distance 20-30cm. Operation: Sand, spray twice, dry 4-6 hours per coat. Data: 2-3 years outdoor protection.

4. Electroplating/Alloying (Industrial-Grade)

Key R&D: Electroplate nickel/chromium or alloy copper to enhance anti-oxidation, suitable for high-demand precision parts, requiring professional equipment.

IV. R&D Reminders

Keep copper dry during operation; avoid hard tools and corrosive reagents; wear gloves; store in dry, ventilated environment; regular maintenance.

Summary

These R&D solutions address stain and oxidation pain points, with targeted technologies for different scenarios. Proper application can ensure copper wire drawing parts retain texture and luster, reducing production costs. I welcome peers to exchange experiences.
